Washington Township Museum of Local History

The Washington Township Museum of Local History collection contains texts and audiovisual material (moving images and audio) from the 1850s to 2000s. A majority of the collection consists of Washingtonian yearbooks and recorded oral interviews with residents of the Washington Township area. Subjects include the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and local history of Fremont, California.

Description : The Railroad Bar in Irvington was next to the railroad on the north side of Washington Boulevard for almost a century. The framed picture on the far wall has some famous boxing bouts from around 1900. Curiously, a watering can is located below a water faucet on the far right. Description : Newark Grammar School, 1916. The 1916 Newark Grammar School replaced the 1879 structure when the 1906 quake weakened it and senior boys were able to put their shoulders to the old building and rock it back and forth. Even the century's turn did not erase traces of pastoral life: The vertical stone columns at the left, serving as part of the school gate, were to keep cattle and pigs from straying into the school yard. Description : Alviso School, located halfway between Centerville and Alvarado. The Alviso School District was established in 1856. It was named for Don Augustin Alviso, the original Mexican grantee of the land. Early records show that there were two buildings on the grounds. Description : Sneden's Drug Store in IOOF Building. A traveling photoghrapher recorded the interior of Sneden's Drugstore in 1898, complete with its elegant gas lamp fixture. Niles received electrical services in 1900. Signs in the drugstore included 'toiletries, choice perfumes, for the complexion and teeth.'
